YOUTH MUSIC THEATRE UK'S WRITERS & COMPOSERS COURSE
Aged 16-21? Think you could write a new musical?
Youth Music Theatre UK, one of the National Youth Music Organisations (NYMOs) is looking to identify and develop potential new musical-theatre writing talent amongst young people. If you - or someone you know - has a passion for writing or composing, YMTs new course could be for you!
The course will run from Monday 29th March to Saturday 3rd April 2010 and will be held at the Casterton Residential Centre in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria. The course will be led by Nick Stimson, a freelance playwright, theatre director and poet, and Conor Mitchell, an award-winning musical theatre composer.
Youth Music Theatre UK welcomes applications from any young person who is interested in becoming a book writer, lyric writer, playwright, composer or any combination thereof. Their definition of music theatre is very wide and can include opera, chamber opera, music theatre, Broadway-style musical theatre and plays/physical theatre with significant musical elements. Youth Music Theatre's own work includes young people creating, developing and devising work themselves, as well as performing in new commissions supported by professional directors, choreographers and musical directors.
There is a course fee of £425 but this covers the cost of full board, lodging and tuition. This fee has been subsidised by grants from the EMI Group. In addition, YMT provides a handbook for all students on how to raise funds for their course fees from school, college, trusts and foundations. It also runs a Hardship Fund for those who may need it. Remember, your first port of call should be your teacher if you are still at school.
