NATIONAL YOUTH ORCHESTRA - BRAVE NEW WORLDS
The NYO announce series of exciting events at The Sage Gateshead. Many are completely FREE and others offer £5 tickets for Under-25s.
Britain’s biggest orchestra invites you on a thrilling musical adventure.
This April, discover brave new worlds with the biggest orchestra ever to set foot on the Gateshead stage. The 175-strong National Youth Orchestra invites you to experience the awesome music of Claude Debussy and his visionary colleague Edgard Varèse. Together they unleashed dazzling new orchestral colours, creating vast musical canvases as excitingly cinematic as any Hollywood blockbuster. Join the NYO and friends including Northern Sinfonia, Young Sinfonia and DJ Nik Barrera on a voyage of discovery leading to a spectacular night of musical excitement on Friday 16 April.
Prelude to Brave New Worlds: Monday 5 April 5.00pm
The journey begins with an open day bringing together young local players with Northern Sinfonia, Young Sinfonia and members of the NYO. Together, they will unleash the party atmosphere of Debussy’s Fêtes. At 5.00pm, come and hear their performance of Fêtes and discover how it leads the way to the works of Varèse. Free

Explosions and Reflections: Saturday 10 April - 10.00am-1.00pm
Who was Varèse? His music inspired pop and rock icons including Frank Zappa. His adventures in electronic music have earned him cult status among students and bedroom DJs. In an illuminating morning of eventsled by Durham University’s Peter Manning, find out more about this amazing artist, hear more of his music, and discover his unparalleled passion for taking music to new frontiers. £7 or free to ticketholders for the NYO concert on 16 April. Poème électronique: Friday 16 April 4.00-10.00pm
Varèse’s iconic composition for tape Poème électronique was commissioned by Le Corbusier for the Brussels World Fair of 1958. One of the most influential ‘installations’ ever made, you can drop in at any time during the day to experience this fascinating piece. Free

Bozza - Children’s Overture
Young wind players from the region and beyond have spent the week with eminent musician Michael Collins preparing a programme of French and American music designed to complement the story of Varèse, who was born in France but made his home in New York. £7
Passport to Brave New Worlds: Friday 16 April 6.15pm, Northern Rock Foundation Hall
Prepare for our main concert with an introduction by conductor Paul Daniel and Simon Clugston, Performance Programme Director at The Sage Gateshead, plus the world premieres of new chamber works by the NYO’s talented teenage composers, each created as a stepping-stone to the sound world of Debussy and Varèse. The biggest orchestra Gateshead has ever seen transports you to the dazzling vistas of Debussy and Varèse. Prepare for an epic journey from the much-loved Prélude à L’après-midi to the vast Amériques which brings New York to the concert hall, generating all the magic and mayhem of the city that never sleeps. Nik Barrera DJ set; Friday 16 April 9.30pm, Concourse
Concluding the festival, local DJ, VJ and promoter Nik Barrera presents an eclectic set, paying homage to the sound world of Varèse and the artists he’s influenced including Frank Zappa and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp). Free
