GCSE, AS and A2 Music, BTEC National Certificate in Music Technology
Music is studied in conjunction with other curriculum subjects. A wide a variety of musical activities are covered, and the institution has a junior and senior choir, an Orchestra open to the whole college, a Big Band, and a newly established Brass Band.
An expanding area is Music Technology, and a BTEC National Certificate in Music
Technology has recently been introduced. There are after school sessions for students to explore the opportunities technology offers.

BA (Hons) Music
Dartington gives you the opportunity to study musicianship, musicology and ensemble skills, as well as the chance to direct your own projects. As well as reinforcing you understanding of music on a theoretical level, the programme involves practical work through performance or composition too.

BA Hons Music (Composition)
This is for those who know that they want to specialise composition. You specialist skills will be developed alongside your understanding of contemporary music. There will also be projects aimed at preparing you for professional work, as well as musicianship sessions and an introductory exploration of music technology.

BA (Hons) music (Performance)
This course is “for thinking musicians who are committed to pursuing their passion for performance.” Practical skills are developed in individual and group settings. There are also projects that prepare students you for professional practice, as well as an examination of contemporary music and its role in culture and society.

Plymouth state that this is a “practical course, offering opportunities to work in well-equipped areas exploring world music, the Western classical tradition and computer-based composition and recording.” The course is suitable for those from both formal and non formal musical backgrounds.

BA (Hons) Sound & Music Production
This is a one year top up degree for those who already hold a foundation degree. This course is for those who want to create and/or produce music and sound in a variety of contexts, such as, film, television and the interactive environments including the Internet. Cutting edge technology is utilised.
Duration: 1 Year full-time
Entry: Foundation degree (or international equivalent) in Sound and Music Technology, Music Production, Popular Music, Music or a similar relevant discipline.
BEd (Primary) with Honours - Music
This is aimed squarely at those who want to teach music in a primary setting. Students will gain experience of teaching in a different school every year, will learn how to teach, plan and assess all primary school subjects, will study music in some depth, and explore issues about teaching and learning.
Duration: 4 Years full-time
Entry: 160-240 tariff points excluding key skills, to include one A level/AVCE at grade C relevant to specialist subject plus English, Mathematics and Science GCSE at grade C or above (special tests available for those over 21). Non-A level qualifications also considered.

First Diploma: Music
This course aims to prepare you for a career in music, whether you aim to be a performer, songwriter, producer or manager. Musicianship, performance, technology, business and more are covered through formal lectures, workshops, coursework, and individual tasks. Students also undertake practical and written assignments, presentations, and a final major project.
Duration: 1 year
Entry: Two GCSEs at D or above in any recognised subjects. A high level of performance, to be assessed at audition.
National Diploma: Music Practice
This course covers musicianship skills such as…Listening Skills, Aural Skills, History of Popular Music, Composing, Keyboard Skills, and Music Theory and Harmony. All students form bands within the first two weeks, and prepare for a series of gigs throughout the year. The Music Industry and Music Technology is also covered. Students also receive free instrumental lessons, supporting the Rock School syllabus.

EDEXCEL (BTEC) National Award: Music Practice (performing) - Rock Pathway
Students cover performance, improvisation and more, and learn through formal lectures, workshops, coursework and individual tasks. All students form bands within the first two weeks, and prepare for a series of gigs throughout the year. Students receive free instrumental lessons, supporting the Rock School syllabus, enabling students to pick up additional qualifications as part of their course.

Bristol state that they offer “up-to-date intellectual training through study of the historical, technical, analytical, compositional and performance aspects of music.” The course is also designed to prepare students, in terms of their critical and creative abilities, for a career in the musical professions. The second and third years allow specialisation in one of a number of areas. 19th-century and 20th-century music are mandatory however.

This course promises an “exciting and varied programme specializing in classical, jazz, musical theatre and world music.” Performance and composition are covered and performance opportunities include annual staged musical theatre and opera productions, as well as a range of ensembles including big band, wind band, early music and Gamelan ensemble.

Sound and Music Technology Foundation Degree
This is based at the dBs commercial recording studio complex in the centre of Plymouth.
Recording, sampling, synthesis and multitrack production techniques are covered as well as working with video, film and computer animation, and working with music in a live context.
